Telling the Story Behind the Work

Every professional membership association does meaningful work within its industry, but not every association manages to explain the work they do in a way their members immediately understand.

Committees attend meetings and manage operations, and volunteers give up their time to keep everything moving. Yet with all this activity, members can sometimes feel disconnected simply because they don’t see the work happening behind the scenes.

Strategic storytelling can help bridge the gap between stakeholders and members, translating organisational effort into a clear story that members can relate to.

Why Storytelling Matters

Most members never witness what goes on behind the scenes. They don’t read the governance papers, join the meetings or have eyes on the internal schedules and deadlines. Their understanding of your work depends entirely on how well you communicate it.

When messages are unclear or too infrequent members often assume little is happening. Ensuring communication is accessible and frequent will make your organisation feel active and engaged, even when the works itself is ticking away quietly in the background.

Explain the Purpose

Associations sometimes fall into the habit of reporting on solely actions, rather than the meaning behind them. Communicating that a “committee met last week” and reviewed X doesn’t tell the members anything about why the work was done.

Members want to know the bigger picture, how problems were solved, and how does it affect the specifically. When updates explain the purpose behind each piece of work, members feel informed rather than left guessing.

Give Examples

Members resonate much better with comms that resemble their own experiences. Drop the business speak: explaining that “members should now get quicker responses” feels much more human than “we’ve improved operational efficiency”.

It’s tempting to lean on technical language, especially when the work itself is technical, but avoiding jargon shows that you respect your member’s time and ensures you are understood by everyone.

Giving clear real-world examples of things members can expect will make your work come across more relevant to them, keeping them more engaged.

Show Change

Impact becomes clearer when you help your members see the “before and after” of your efforts. Event small improvements feel meaningful when they’re explained in a way that shows what has shifted.

Simplifying approval processes or fixing a clunky system only resonates when you help members see how much smoother their experience has become. The comparisons you make don’t need to be dramatic, but specific enough for members to picture the improvement.

Connect Each Update to the Bigger Narrative

Every update you share is part of a larger narrative to improve your industry, strengthen your support to members or steadily move towards long-term goals. Sharing these updates shouldn’t be seen as extra work, but as good leadership. It helps members understand not just what’s going on, but why.

When people can see the story behind the progress, they stop feeling like observers and start feeling like contributors to a shared journey.
