For many professional membership associations ramping up towards the end of the year, December can feel like a finish line. Reports are all signed off, events have come and gone, and the final set of minutes have been filed. It’s usually the time everybody collectively exhales and shuts down for a well-earned break.
While everybody does need a cut-off date, marking December as a metaphorical endpoint can throw up some issues. January can often start as a bit of stumble, meetings that should have been planned in November suddenly scramble for space, and instead of beginning the year with a clear plan, associations find themselves playing catch up.
The first few weeks of the year will set the tone for your board, and your members. Preorganised meetings and events will maintain that sense of stability and professionalism for your members. Dealing with a backlog straight off the bat can feel demoralising and can lead to lost opportunities.
Use December as a Launchpad
The key is to treat December as a springboard for the year ahead. A few deliberate steps can make all the difference:
✅Schedule January Now: Don’t wait until after Christmas. Set dates for board meetings well in advance, circulate agendas early, and lock in any major deadlines before December ends.
✅Prepare Communications in Advance: Queue newsletters, announcements, or policy briefings so they’re ready to go when inboxes are fresh in January.
✅Close Loops: Resist the temptation to leave tasks “for future you”. Even small unfinished jobs create drag when you’re trying to build momentum in the new year.
✅Anticipate Questions: Members will return with their own deadlines and challenges. Having guidance, resources, or FAQs ready demonstrates foresight and support.
The Payoff
Forward planning can transform January from a frantic restart into a smoother continuation of your association’s responsibilities. Members see an organisation that is prepared and proactive, not one scrambling to get its house in order.
If December is treated as a launchpad rather than a finish line, then January can become a month of clarity and confidence, setting the right tone for everything that follows in 2026.
