Suddenly it’s October and your inbox is full of conference invitations, seminar schedules and AGM reminders. It’s easy to look at all those dates and wonder if it’s really worth going to another networking event right now.
The thing is, it’s at these events where the most valuable networking moments happen. It might be during a chat whilst you’re looking for the WiFi code at a venue, or the connection you make at the end of a webinar breakout room.
Sometimes it’s less about the official agenda and more about the serendipity of being in the same place, whether that be online or physically, as others in your profession.
Season for Networking
Autumn networking isn’t really like spring launches or winter catch ups. There’s a distinct energy with the summer behind us, and everybody feeling refreshed. There’s a sense of let’s get moving before the year ends. That urgency brings a sharper focus, with conversations often cutting straight to an action plan.
This is a perfect situation for membership associations. It helps members to plug back in, surface new policy discussions, share lessons learned from summer projects, or set up collaborations that will carry momentum to the end of 2025.
Connections
Networking can feel at bit of a challenge at these events. Déjà vu strikes as you see the same faces and go through the same round of introductions. That’s why the best membership associations think carefully about how to mix things up.
- Pairing long-standing members with newer ones for informal introductory chats.
- Hosting themed sessions around a hot topic so conversations have direction.
- Offering virtual drop-in slots that make spaces for those who can’t travel.
It’s not all about the volume of events you attend, but the variety. Members don’t need more opportunities; they just need better ones.
Value
Networking this autumn shouldn’t be about filling rooms or trying to expand for the sake of it. It’s about creating spaces where members leave thinking that their attendance was worth their time.
What brings your members back is when they feel those moments of unexpected value, like the contact they didn’t expect to meet, or the capture idea they hadn’t yet conceptualised. They’ll carry that energy back into their work, and back into your community.
The season is extremely busy, but it’s also blurting with potential.
