At Cygnul, our values are Collaboration, Stability, Effectiveness, Integrity, and Playfulness. We are committed to maintaining and developing a collaborative and supportive work environment for all of us in the office. With some new additions to our ever-growing team, we recently organised a staff day centred around the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), aiming to enhance our understanding of one another and strengthen our team dynamics.
What is MBTI?
The MBTI is a widely recognised personality assessment tool that identifies individual preferences in how people can perceive their environment and make decisions. By exploring our team’s preferences, we can take a close look at our collective strengths and how we can best work together.
The MBTI framework categorises people in 16 distinct personality types, based on four key dimensions:
- Extraversion (E) vs Introversion (I): Do you gain energy from social interaction or from spending time alone?
- Sensing (S) vs Intuition (N): Do you focus on concrete details or the bigger picture?
- Thinking (T) vs Feeling (F): Do you make decisions based on logic and analysis or personal values and emotions?
- Judging (J) vs Perceiving (P): Do you prefer structure and organisation, or do you thrive in flexibility and spontaneity?
Each individual falls somewhere along these spectrums, resulting in a four-letter personality type (e.g. INFJ, ESTP, ENFP). Understanding these differences is what allows us to work more effectively together, appreciating the strengths and working characteristics of our colleagues.
Far from putting people into rigid boxes, the MBTI encourages self-awareness and adaptability. By recognising our team’s natural tendencies and those of others, we can improve communication, collaborating and decision-making, which are all essential for us to grow and succeed both individually and as a company.
Looking Ahead
Our MBTI team day was more than just an opportunity to learn about personality types, but a step towards a more cohesive and understanding team. We believe that days like these are absolutely essential to our development, and we look forward to seeing the results as we continue to grow.
