Countdown to 2026: Setting Intentions That Stick

Countdown to 2026: Setting Intentions That Stick

As 2025 winds to a close, many of us feel the familiar tug of “fresh start thinking”. A new year promises opportunity, momentum, and perhaps even a chance to finally get on top of things! Although if you’ve ever set resolutions that fizzled out by February, you’ll know that good intentions only get you so far.

For associations and membership bodies, the real challenge is turning those intentions into actions that last beyond January. So how do you set goals for the new year that actually stick?

Start with clarity, not wishful thinking

It’s tempting to jot down broad ambitions, like “grow the membership” and “increase impact”, but without clarity, these statements remain as aspirations rather than plans. Instead, ask:

✅ What does success look like in practice?

✅ Who’s responsible for getting it done?

✅ How will we know when we’ve achieved it?

Being clear and setting measurable intentions stand a much better chance of being accomplished.

Build on what’s already working

Setting new goals doesn’t mean starting from scratch. Often, the seeds of success have already been planted, and you need to focus on strengthening what’s already working. By building upon your already solid foundation, you’re much more likely to create a bigger impact in 2026.

Keep the timeframes realistic

It’s very easy to plan in the abstract, but the reality of working with a professional membership association is that your diary is packed, you have competing demands, and are thrown plenty of curveballs.

Setting a manageable pace will keep intentions realistic and stop your plans from becoming another source of pressure. Consider breaking big goals into quarterly milestones for bite sized chunks of accomplishment.

Align goals with member needs

Intentions that only serve the board or office rarely gain traction. The goals that stick are the ones that actually benefit the members. This might mean needing to refresh membership feedback or simply ask committees and working groups would make the biggest difference to them in 2026.

Be accountable

A beautifully written workplace can still gather dust if nobody actually takes ownership, but accountability doesn’t necessarily have to mean finger pointing. It can look like shared progress updates or short reflective check-ins during board meeting. Collective ownership of items will always encourage progress.

Review & Adjust

Even the best-laid plans can go astray. What matters is building in moments to reflect, adjust and reframe. Regular reviews help you to avoid the “set and forget” mentality that leaves intentions as little more than a January exercise.

Countdown

A new calendar year is a useful marker, but it doesn’t mean that real change is a given. Completed actions and progress only happens because association choose to set intentions that are clear, realistic, and rooted in the needs of their members.

As you look towards 2026, don’t just think about the year you hope to have, but think about you can realistically shape it.
