My First Month at Cygnul: Feeling Welcome, Supported and Part of the Team

Starting a new job is always a mixture of excitement and nerves. You want to make a good impression, learn quickly and get to know your new colleagues, but there’s always that little voice wondering, “Will I fit in?”

Looking back on my first month at Cygnul, I can honestly say that feeling didn’t last for long.

From before my first day, I knew people were looking forward to welcoming me. There was even a glass a fizz (non-alcoholic of course!). I received everything I needed to get started and had a clear idea of what my first week would look like. That simple preparation made a real difference, it meant I could focus on getting to know people rather than worrying about practicalities.

One of the things that has stood out most is how approachable everyone is. No question has ever felt too small, and I’ve been encouraged to ask whenever I’m unsure. Instead of feeling like I should know everything, I’ve been given the space to learn, make connections and build my confidence.

I’ve also appreciated how much time colleagues have invested in helping me understand not just what we do, but why we do it. Working with charities, membership organisations and professional bodies means every task contributes to helping organisations make a positive difference. Understanding that bigger picture has made even the everyday jobs feel meaningful.

Something else I’ve noticed is the culture. People genuinely support one another. Whether it’s taking time to explain a process, checking in after a busy day or sharing a laugh over a cup of tea, there’s a real sense that everyone wants each other to succeed.

The first month has been a balance of learning new systems, meeting clients, getting to know colleagues and gradually taking on more responsibility. There have definitely been moments where I’ve needed to ask for help, but that’s never been seen as a weakness. Instead, it’s been part of the learning process.

One thing that made me feel particularly valued was being asked for my thoughts. As someone new to the organisation, I see things with fresh eyes, and it was encouraging to know that my perspective was welcomed rather than overlooked.

The regular check-ins with my line manager have also been reassuring. Rather than feeling like formal reviews, they’ve been conversations about how I’m settling in, what’s going well and where I might need more support. Knowing there’s time set aside to talk openly has made it much easier to ask questions and discuss my development.

After a month, I still have plenty to learn, but I already feel part of the team. I’ve gained confidence, built relationships and started to understand how my role contributes to supporting our clients and their important work.

If you’re thinking about joining Cygnul, my advice would be simple: come ready to learn, ask questions and get involved. You’ll find a team that’s generous with their knowledge, supportive of your development and genuinely interested in helping you succeed.

Starting somewhere new can feel daunting, but my first month has shown me that when people take the time to make you feel welcome, listened to and valued, it makes all the difference.
