The first week back after the Easter holidays always comes with a mix of energies, some have a renewed sense of focus, while others are trying to remember exactly where they were before they left on leave.
For associations this is the moment where committees, staff and volunteers break out of the stop-start rhythm and break back into the steady flow for everyday delivery.
Though back to full capacity doesn’t have to necessarily mean working flat out. Associations that reset most effectively are the ones that start by reassessing priorities, realigning workloads and rebuilding momentum with care over intensity.
Be Part of the Shared Picture
There can be a lot of changes in a couple of weeks, with shifting deadlines, new queries and committee members with fresh ideas. Tasks that felt urgent in March may no longer hold the same weight in April.
Rather than taking a deep dive into your backlog straight way, it’s worth creating an accurate snapshot with your team of what’s truly important right now. Ask yourselves what’s still relevant, what’s managed to resolve itself and what needs re-prioritising.
Ensuring you’re all on the same page will stop your team from falling into the trap of picking up work for the sake of it and give you all chance to get stuck in with a collective goal in mind.
Rebalance
After a break, it’s normal for some team members to have heavier inboxes or a build up of members queries that others. Redistributing tasks in the first week back prevents any bottlenecking and stops individuals from feeling overwhelmed with work.
This is a great moment to revisit what we discussed last week: The Eisenhower Matrix. It gives the team a shared way of discussing what’s urgent, what’s important and what can wait, helping to stop overwhelm before it creeps up.
Reconfirm Responsibilities
Holiday periods can often play as a factor into half-finished tasks, disrupted workflows and temporary cover. Now that everyone is back in the office, now is a good time to work out which tasks are going back to its original owner, what still requires extra support and what’s ready to completely close off.
Taking time to working this out now will be able to save trouble later down the line with accidental duplication of efforts, and tasks slipping through the cracks.
Re-establish Communication
It can unfortunately be the case when people come back from a break, they slip out of the habit of keeping one another informed. Small updates can get missed, assumptions fill the gaps that clear communication used to occupy, and decisions slow down because of it.
Instead of tackling everything at once when you come back, take a moment to reset and set a precedent on how you want the team to communicate moving forward.
🤝 Agree where updates should go, so nothing gets lost between inboxes.
🔍 Clarify when the team should formally check in.
🖥️ Decide what genuinely needs a live discussion, versus what can be decided autonomously.
This isn’t about creating unnecessary work but restoring simple and steady habits that stop confusion from building across the team. When everyone knows where to look, when to share, and what’s expected, the whole organisation finds its footing again far more quickly.
Sustainable Momentum
There’s always a temptation to catch up as quickly as possible. Although what’s actually important is to focus on how consistent you can be in your efforts in the weeks that follow the return.
Encourage your team to pace themselves and set realistic targets. Celebrate progress that rebuilds momentum rather than the illusion of instant productivity. This will help to set a calmer tone, a tone that in associations will help to influence everything from volunteer motivation to committee engagement.
