Blue Monday: From Grey Skies to Bright Ideas

The third Monday of January has been given a rather gloomy label over the years: Blue Monday. Supposedly the “saddest day of the year”, it’s a concept that first appeared in 2005, based on a formula that combined factors like cold weather, post-Christmas debt, and failed New Year’s resolutions, coupled with a long wait until payday.

While the science behind Blue Monday is more of a marketing myth than fact, the sentiment it captures is familiar. January can feel like a long stretch, with the festive spark faded, everlasting dark evenings, and many of us already caught up in office mayhem.

The truth is that acknowledging the dip gives us a chance to turn it around. Instead of sinking into grey skies, Blue Monday can be an opportunity to check in with ourselves, our colleagues, and our members.

Pause & Connect

When workloads are heavy and inboxes are overflowing, it’s easy to slip into a “react” mode and forget about the members behind the processes.

For teams, that might mean opening a meeting with a light-hearted check-in or encouraging a five-minute catch-up over coffee. For membership associations, it could be the perfect moment to send a warm, personal message to your community, not just with updates, but with genuine encouragement. A short “we see and value you” note can make all the different in helping members feel connected.

Goal Setting

January can overwhelm the most organised among us. Resolutions may already be faltering, projects may feel endless, and the thought of planning the whole year ahead can be daunting. Rather than letting everything get on top of you at once, consider setting yourself “micro goals”.

For management committees, this could mean refreshing a section of your website to make access to resources easier, categorising your contact list, or putting the finishes touches on an upcoming event or plan.

For individual members, encouraging them to set one manageable professional goal, such as scheduling a networking call, can help replace the perceived big January push with something more achievable and motivating.

Review and Focus

Blue Monday can be an ideal moment for teams and committees to step back from the day-to-day and take stock of priorities. Rather than powering through tasks in autopilot, associations can use the day to review current projects, identify what’s most urgent or impactful, and clarify the next steps for the quarter.

This kind of structured reflection helps ensure energy is spent where it matters most, turning a potentially sluggish day into a strategic reset for the organisation.
