As March rolls in, so does an essential reminder for all of us to pay attention to our sleep habits: National Bed Month. While the business of day-to-day life often leads to us neglecting our sleep patterns, this awareness month serves as a nudge towards prioritising rest and rejuvenation.
In the midst of busy schedules and daunting deadlines, it’s easy to overlook the importance of quality sleep, especially when trying to already focus on a good work-life balance, but doing so can have a huge knock-on effect on our ability to perform effectively.
Sleep is too often talked about in a trivial nature, with most thinking that a good night’s sleep is a luxury, when in fact, it’s a biological necessity. Adequate sleep is crucial for cognitive function, emotional wellbeing and overall health. If you skimp on sleep, you are effectively compromising your performance both in your home and work life.
No matter which industry you are a part of the ability to think clearly and remain focussed is paramount. Even mild sleep deprivation can lead to decreased attention and impaired memory recall, both of which are detrimental to productivity and performance in the workplace. Sleep deprivation effects more than just your cognitive functions, it can also have a serious effect on your mental and physical health.
While we aren’t suggesting that you request for dedicated “nap rooms” to be installed in your offices like some Silicon Valley companies, we do think that it’s a good idea to establish a consistent sleep schedule. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends, helps regulate our body’s internal clock and promotes better quality sleep.
Other common tips for improving your sleep quality are:
– Partaking in regular exercise
– Avoiding the use of screens while in bed
– Limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption
– Avoiding vigorous activity before bed
Remember, a good night’s sleep isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity for you to excel in all aspects of your life.
